Polaris Wireless in panel discussion on future of 3D location technology and 911 at NENA 2019 Conference and Expo

Speaker(s)Karl Kessenich, Executive Director

Topics:      3D location, public safety applications, E911 and first responders

When:       Tuesday, June 18 3:00 – 4:00 pm EDT

Where:      NENA The 9-1-1 Association Annual Conference and Expo,

                  Gaylord Palms Resort, Orlando, Florida

The challenge of finding wireless 9-1-1 callers is now being met with new handset-based and vertical-location technologies. In this breakout session, titled A Quantum Leap for 9-1-1: The Vertical Plane & Handset-Derived Location Polaris Wireless Executive Director Karl Kessenich will provide an update on the FCC mandate for vertical location and an overview of the technologies that make it all work.

High accuracy 3D location exists today so the next step is delivering this technology to PSAPs. FCC regulations impact the timing on when new technology standards are adopted by wireless network operators, and subsequently made available to PSAPs. This capability is not required to be delivered by the carriers until 2021 for the Top 25 cities and until 2023 for the Top 50 cities. In the meantime, NG911 upgrades continue yet some PSAPs are managing more than one system that provides caller location. Overriding all other considerations is the PSAP’s primary mission to assist emergency callers and save lives. Location technology exists and will make its way to the PSAPs, it is just a matter of how and when.
