Santa Clara, CA — March 11th, 2004 —
Polaris Wireless, a pioneer in wireless location technology, announced today that Triton PCS has deployed Polaris Wireless’s groundbreaking location technology across the wireless carrier’s Southeast service area. Triton PCS, an award-winning provider of wireless service in the Southeast, is the first U.S. carrier to deploy the Polaris Wireless technology. Triton PCS selected the system after multi-vendor competitive evaluations.
Triton PCS has deployed the Polaris Wireless location technology across much of its service area, which spans Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, northern Georgia and northeastern Tennessee as part of its E911 solution. This deployment assists Triton PCS in meeting the Federal Communications Commission’s E911 Phase II requirements in many of the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) areas within the company’s coverage territory. Triton PCS subscribers and roamers calling for emergency assistance in areas where PSAPs have requested E911 Phase II can be located by public safety agencies that dispatch emergency services.
“We selected Polaris Wireless as an integral part of our E911 Phase II solution because we were able to implement the technology quickly and cost effectively. It also affords us the flexibility to meet the demands of E911 Phase II in a timely manner,” said Glen Robinson, Triton PCS senior vice president of technology.
The Polaris Wireless Location Signatures product is a breakthrough in wireless location technology. The accurate, reliable system meets all FCC E911 Phase II requirements and is compliant with industry standards. Performance tested in the United States and Europe, the Polaris WLS product resides on standard servers and requires no modifications to handsets or cell sites. This software-only approach simplifies and speeds deployments, provides complete network coverage and dramatically reduces capital expenditures for wireless carriers.
The Polaris Wireless Location Signatures technology is integrated into the Triton PCS network through standard data interfaces. Triton PCS wireless subscribers and roamers who dial 911 are connected with the appropriate PSAP. The technology leverages data exchanged between the mobile handset and the wireless network as part of normal network operation. The Polaris system determines the location of the mobile phone and, upon PSAP request, relays the location to the PSAP, which dispatches fire, law enforcement or emergency medical personnel as appropriate.
“We are pleased that Triton PCS has chosen to deploy the innovative Polaris software-based solution,” said Manlio Allegra, CEO of Polaris Wireless. “The Polaris Wireless Location Signatures system can be easily deployed in a portion of a wireless network or across the entire network as an operator’s primary location technology or as a complement to existing location technologies.”
